Wayde had his 18 month old checkup today with the wonderful Karla Hennebold. I always love these check-ups because it is one of the only times its okay to brag about your child for a whole 30 minutes! Wayde loves them too, since he gets to play with all the fun doctor office toys. As soon as we walked in the door's today, he ran right over to the play kitchen and started microwaiving the oven mit. He sure takes after his ol' mom in the kitchen!
Wayde was right in the middle of pushing a child’s shopping cart full of crayons around, when they called his name. We went back with the nurse and started to get Wayde undressed for his weight check. This is when I noticed a rotten smell fuming up from Wayde’s diaper. Just my luck! And, I even somehow forgot his wipes in the car. Thankfully, the nurse helped me out, but poor wayde truly fumigated the patient room for the remainder of his time there!
When I tried to pick Wayde up after his diaper change change to put his naked little body on the scale, the paper liner on the DR's table stuck to his bare buns and Wayde ripped the whole liner right off! Poor Wayde probably though he was getting a bikini wax. The nurse did find this fairly amusing, which of course made wayde want to try the whole thing again!
I placed Wayde on the scale and a whopping 29lb 1 ½ oz showed up on the screen! Woowe, Do we have ourselves a strong boy! The nurse then laid him down on the DR table again (after covering it up with a towel since he ripped the paper off!) and took his length measurements. Wayde is now officially measured in feet, and is 2 ft. 10 1.2 inches and has a head circumference of 19.25 inches. She finished taking his measurements and let us know that DR Hennebold would be in to see us soon.
Wayde and I colored and read some Spanish books while we waited for DR Hennebold to arrive. As soon as the DR opened the door, she started screaming the same reaction that we get every time someone new sees him. “LOOK AT THAT FULL HEAD OF BEAUTIFUL CURLEY HAIR!!”. She “Oooooed” and “Awweeed” over his golden locks for a few minutes and spoke about how not to cut it, since it will make him look more like a toddler! She spoke about her son’s hair, like most other mom’s, and immediately start sharing how sad she was then she first had chop off her childrens hair and advise us not to do it. She then says what she always does (which warms my heart) “Gosh, he just looks like a perfect mixture of you and Wyatt”. I this is one of the reasons why I love Wayde’s DR so much, as she knows us by name every time.
Dr. Hennebold then started to share with us all Wayde’s measurement statistics: 95% percentile for height, 85% percentile for weight, and 80% percentile for head circumference. All she said was: BIG Healthy, healthy boy.
She spoke with me for a while about his milestones and what Wayde is currently doing. She went over the activity guide that we had to previously do with Wayde before the appointment (6 pages of different tasks to see where is developmentally). She immediately said that Wayde is off the charts! She was so proud of him and mentioned he is truly at a 2-3 year old level. We spoke about his language, cognition, motor skills, personality and comprehension. She asked how many words he knows and how he uses words together. I gave her the example of him saying “Mama Mine” this morning while pointing to his binky on the floor and she was astonished, saying he is far ahead of his age! I spoke to her about him being in day care and being mostly with older children. I also spoke about the signs that he can do and how he communicates. I don’t think the DR wanted to believe all that I said, that was, until Wayde turned to me and said “mama” and put his hand to his mouth, and did the sign language for hungry. She laughed and applauded him! (aparently he just had seen the snack's in my purse!).
The DR asked about temper tantrums, and I reassured her that we are defiantly not short of tantrums in our house! She asked me to give her an example of the last big tantrum he had. I spoke about dinner the other night, where he was doing the sign for “more”, but we didn’t know what he wanted more of and had to guess through multiple objects as he got angrier. As the DR’s jaw dropped, she said these kind of tantrums are intellectual tantrums, since he knows what he wants, but he is just not able to verbalize it. Once again, she praised him and how well he is doing!
She was really pleased to know that he shows signs of embarrassment too, as she says those are advanced characteristics for his age! We also spoke of his shy nature and said that this can be a very good trait at this age.
She asked how his appetite was, and we chuckled as I rubbed his tummy. “He eats almost anything!”. She was pleased to hear this and said I may not want to tell other mothers in the waiting room this, as I would probably get the evil eye! Aparently this is the age most other toddlers becomg picky eaters.
THIS NEXT STATMENT IS FOR ALL THE GRANDMOTHERS, DA-DA, UNCLES, AUNTS, GIGI’s, PAPA’s, AND ALL OTHERS WHO LOVE HIM SO:
Dr Hennebold said that it is imperative not to give him too many sweets!! She said for the next 6 months his diet is going to be changing and if he gets many sweets, this will change his taste buds & eating habits. I laughed and said that she is preaching to the wrong person, but that I would give her all my family’s phone numbers so she can tell them too! She did say that it was important and especially since he is such a big boy, we do not want to get his eating habits on the wrong path. So, no more sweets! :) Pretty please!
Over all, the DR spoke up and down of how healthy little man is and how advanced he is at his age! Overall, she gave Wayde an A++++ for today’s appointment.
But, then came the hard part: Vaccinations.
Thankfully, we only had one vaccination today, but will have to come back next week for another one. The nurse came back in and pulled out the long needle, as wayde watched and sat on mama’s lap. His eyes were fixated on what she was doing as she poked his poor little leg. But, not a peep came out of his mouth, not even a wince. What a good boy!
We will see Dr Hennebold again for Wayde’s 2 year appointment this April! As we walked out of the office, Wayde was even able to grab a Elmo sticker! The whole walk to the car, wayde was repeating “Elmo” and was waiving the sticker like a flag with pride!
